Kerry “Toll You Not Me, Baby” Stemler was right there at the Carnegie Center in 2011, as the Sherman Minton Bridge fell ill. He did not drink real beer. More of the box wine type — know what I mean?
It seems like only yesterday that we loaded up and drove to Bloomington for the season-opening Brewers of Indiana Guild festival. In fact, it was April. This weekend is light, and then the autumnal transition kicks into gear.
Tonight: The Carnegie Center’s annual fundraising fete, “A Taste for Art and History.”
And, a side note: Although I did not attend last evening’s city council meeting, co-conspirator IAH reports that a presentation was made by Danese Pease, the Floyd County Tobacco Prevention Coordinator, the gist of which is that a movement is afoot to make all city-sanctioned outdoor events where under-smoking-age persons are present into non-smoking outdoor events. Examples include the recently concluded Bicentennial Park concerts, and shows at the Amphitheater (it really does exist, even if the city seldom uses it).
Ponder the chances of such a law being enforced at the July 3 fireworks show by the river, where a crowd of 7,000 or so spread out in all directions atop the levee, by a city that won’t even stick to its own downtown parking ordinances … and check out NABC’s September calendar.

NABC CALENDAR HIGHLIGHTS FOR SEPTEMBER … 2014
NABC AT HOME: OUR BRICKS AND MORTAR
For this September calendar update, one filled with off-premise activities both near and far, a simple reminder should suffice: NABC has two locations in New Albany. Our original Pizzeria & Public House near IU Southeast offers a pizzeria-style food menu, NABC’s beers of proven merit and a list of quality guest beers. In downtown New Albany, our taproom at Bank Street Brewhouse no longer prepares meals, but you can pair NABC drafts and bomber bottles with delivery food, carry-in or the contents of your own picnic basket.
This having been said, we have two upcoming events of importance at the Pizzeria & Public House.
Thursday, September 25
Louisville Beer: Derby City History on Draft Book Signing with Kevin Gibson
On Thursday, September 25 at NABC’s Pizzeria & Public House, our old friend Kevin Gibson will feature, sell and sign his new book about beer. The gig starts at 6:00 p.m. and lasts until 8:00 p.m., or whenever the stories recede. It is predicted that Kevin will drink beer while doing so.

September is the veritable apex of event season, with seemingly everyone squeezing a final outdoor fest or two into the calendar prior to the arrival of cooler weather. September also is the time for Louisville Craft Beer Week. Brewers and sales staff will be present at most of the following dates, so if you’re attending, come by, say hi, and sample progressive brewing.

We regret to announce that owing to circumstances beyond the control of NABC and the Lanesville Jaycees, we’ll be unable to pour Tafelbier at this year’s Lanesville Heritage Weekend. We’re hoping that next year will be a different story, so please stay tuned.

NABC is delighted to welcome reinforcements after 12 years in the trenches battling beer-culture-shock-as-usual on the northern bank of the Ohio. The future begins now. Here is the Flat12 beer list:

Tumbleweed originated during the 1970s in a tiny space across from New Albany High School.
Now Louisville’s flagship Tumbleweed location will pour Helles and Black & Blue Grass for LCBW, with draft Black & Blue Grass coming to other regional Tumbleweed locations in coming weeks.
Wednesday, September 17
Simply Thai and New Albanian Brewing Company present a beer dinner and tap takeover in celebration of Louisville Craft Beer Week. The cost is $55 per person, with the dinner limited to 30 seats; 10% of proceeds will be donated to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. There’ll be a 5-course meal prepared by Chef Chaveewan Saing, paired with 7 different beers from NABC.
For the complete menu, visit NABC’s web site.

Past collaborative food and beer pairings at The Garage Bar have been top-rate; NABC brings the beers, and staff at The Garage Bar pairs the beers with regular menu items. This time NABC is bringing Black & Blue Grass, Solidarity, Beak’s Best Bitter and Action! APA, with a rare added bonus: A cask-conditioned pin of Hoptimus-a-Rita, Louisville’s classic Double IPA dry-orange-peeled.
Friday, September 19
How do we preview something that’s never happened before? Here’s the idea,
courtesy of the city of Louisville, and everyone’s excited about how it will proceed: “The first initiative in the ReSurfaced movement is to take the currently underutilized space behind the facades of 615-621 West Main Street in downtown Louisville, and create a six week long pop-up beer garden, outdoor cafe, and event space beginning on September 19, 2014.” We know that NABC’s Community Dark will be on tap at the start.
Saturday, September 20
Copper & Kings asked a dozen regional craft breweries from Kentucky and Indiana, including NABC, to select a beer and age it in brandy barrels. The results will be available for sampling in this first-of-its-kind LCBW event.
Saturday, September 20
It’s a
free, all-ages street festival with live music, craft beer, spirits, local food, and arts & crafts, benefiting Boys & Girls Haven. Streetscape anchors will be Zanzabar, The New Vintage, Greenhaus and Purrswaytions. Black & Blue Grass and Community Dark are pouring, and there’ll be special hourly tappings, with NABC’s turn coming at 7:00 p.m. with Action! Pale Ale.
Sunday, September 21
NABC closes LCBW in New Albany with New Albany IndieFest, an annual street fest and celebration of localism, sponsored by the New Albany First independent business association. The fest features local music on two stages, local business vendors and local arts & crafts. NABC and Dragon King’s Daughter will be pouring Indiana craft beers throughout the day. There’ll also be an Iron Chef competition at NABC’s Bank Street Brewhouse.

Saturday & Sunday, September 20 & 21
For the first time in 2014, the
Fall Flea Vintage and Antique Marketplace comes to downtown New Albany. Bank Street between Market and Spring will be closed off to traffic, and the action commences. NABC will provide a craft beer concession for the occasion, so even those not interested in shopping, there’ll be appropriate refreshments.
Saturday, September 27
Rock the Rocks is an annual fundraiser held at the Falls of the Ohio State Park in Clarksville, Indiana, and once again NABC is proud to help make this event possible. We’ll have samples on hand.
And so forth.
Coming sooner than you think: October … and that means Fringe Fest at Bank Street Brewhouse.
