In 2011, I declared for a city council at-large seat as a Democrat, and was defeated fair and square in the primary, finishing fifth in a six-person race, but garnering a respectable vote total while spending nary a penny.
My reward for this exercise in downward civic immobility was two-fold: First, it cannot be said that I didn’t try (up yours, troglodytes), and second, the newspaper took away my weekly column sans coherent explanation, although we can surmise that somewhere in Alabama, someone became irate at the tone of my pants-down progressivism. But they do sports mighty fine, Verle.
Following are links to five somewhat randomly selected pieces published here during the campaign. These strike me as representative of my failed campaign’s overall tone.
